This article is written to settle an ongoing debate for dancers. This age-old debate discusses whether dance is a sport or an art. Many dancers claim that dance is a sport as opposed to an art form or a “hobby”. On one hand, you get the people who simply see it as a performing art, they don’t even begin to consider the athleticism it requires for not only the individual, but for the team. Dance not only requires strength, technique and flexibility, but it also requires a competitive nature and teamwork. All of which are elements for every sport. The dictionary defines a sport as “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment” (Oxford Languages). Dance follows all of these elements, especially competitive dance.
