The Ontario government announced this afternoon that Netflix has had a negative impact on society since the start of the pandemic. Trudeau and the federal government has voted to ban Netflix streaming across Canada starting April 1st. The average Canadian streams 10 hours of content off Netflix daily. With COVID-19 causing a lot of people to work from home, businesses are complaining that they have seen a huge drop in worker productivity. Major companies are blaming Netflix as part of the at-home distraction. There is also an increase in overall laziness across the population. This new generation of "couch potatoes" brings concerns about an increase in obesity rates in youth and young adults. Parents are concerned that their children aren't wanting to leave their bedrooms and that they are missing out on important opportunities to socialize because they are watching too much TV.
The government is going to be launching its own streaming service called 'PictureThis'. It will limit households to 2 hours of streaming a day. It comes with a steep fee of $299 a year. It will showcase Canadian-made content with a focus on documentaries and educational resources.
