In an interview with Breaking News 365 this morning, the Australian Minister for Education, Dan Tehan revealed that beginning with 2021’s graduating class, there will be changes to the school system and HSC testing process.
“ The rapid changes and increased complexity of today’s world present new challenges and put new demands on our education system.” Tehan said, “There has been generally a growing awareness of the necessity to change and improve the preparation of students for productive functioning in the continually changing and highly demanding environment. In confronting this challenge it is necessary to consider the complexity of the education system itself and the multitude of problems that must be addressed. Clearly, no simple, single uniform approach can be applied with the expectation that significant improvements of the system will occur.”
When asked for more details on the changes, Tehan replied with the following, “The plan isn’t particularly clear yet, we’re hoping to test it on the 2021 Year 12s. What I do know for sure is that we will ensure that exam conditions increase in difficultly and become more strict so that only the students truly deserving of their scores will receive them. Additionally, the results of other students at the school of the students will have greater affect on the results. If Tim receives a HSC mark of 90 but the average of his grade at school is 40, the ATAR will be more noticeably changed down to about 65.”
We are yet to see exactly how these changes will be implemented but many of the current NSW Year 10 students do not seem to be reacting particularly well to this news.
