A small group of teenagers on a school outing were mauled Sunday afternoon by a group of Great White Sharks that had been seen the day before near the city of Avalon on Catalina Island. The group of sharks had been spotted several hundred yards off shore, but no warning was issued to the school group that was learning about SCUBA diving.
In an unusual display of behavior, the sharks attacked without dragging the swimmers under, severing multiple limbs on several of the teens. Those injured were four males; Robert “Bob” Wilson, 14 of Oceanside, Matt Miller, 13, also from Oceanside and Art Rodrigues, 14. Two female swimmers, both lost a single leg, Eileen Williams, 14 and Irene Chow, a foreign exchange student from Japan. One student, Francis “Skip” Schafer, was rescued by boaters who saw the teen being attacked; he also lost multiple limbs.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for the teens: noarmsnolegs
