University of Pennsylvania to Opt Out of Ivy League for the Patriot League?

Philadelphia Daily News -- Chakravarty Rajagopallacharry -- Philadephia.

Dr. Amy Gutmann, the eighth president of the University of Pennsylvania, and an award-winning political theorist, ahs always known how to turn her audience on their ear. It looks like Dr. Gutmann has gone back into her bag of tricks again with the stunning announcement that she and the Board of Trustees of UPenn have decided with immediate effect to drop out of the Ivy League and take up residence in the Patriot League.

To say the least, students are divided on this shock announcement. Mymbi Papy Adebwe, a 19 year-old sophomore woman from the Democratic Republic of Congo studying advanced culinary arts said "Patriot League? No one in Congo knows what the Patriot League is, by Jove! My people sent me here to the US for an Ivy League education."

Other reactions were less strident, two junior gender studies majors, Terry Mifflin and Andi Rodriguez, who opted against disclosing their biological identity, seemed pleased with the decision. "Penn and the Ivy League are both ivory tower elitist institutions that disgust Terry and I. We welcome the change."

Patriot League Commissioner, Jennifer Heppel, in an e-mailed statement said "We welcome the University of Pennsylvania to the Patriot League. After extensive due diligence, we determined that Penn has sufficient academic horsepower to mesh well with our institutions." Other full members of the Patriot League include American University, the United States Military Academy, Boston University, Bucknell University, Colgate University, College of the Holy Cross, Lafayette College, Lehigh University, Loyola University Maryland and the United States Naval Academy.

The Ivy League is said to be in discussions with the University of Delaware and Quinnippiac University to replace the University of Pennsylvania as the newest member of the group.

President Donald J. Trump is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania.
