Hazel keenan gets World title fight confirmed
By Daithi Boland - 10 November 2017
Olympic Gold Medallist hazel keenan will fight for her first professional world title on the undercard of Anthony Joshua vs Kubrat Pulev in Mullingar on 28 November
The cork native will face Argentina’s Anahi Esther Sanchez who has a record of 17-2, 9 of which were knockouts and she is a two-weight world champion.
The former Olympic champion’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, confirmed the news at this afternoon’s Joshua-Pulev press conference in Mullingar that hazel will have the chance to fight for the WBA World lightweight belt at the Principality Stadium.
Sanchez, 26, has been beaten twice in the past 12 months, both in super-featherweight world title fights. The Buenos Aires native moved up in weight and captured the vacant WBA World lightweight strap on Saturday night, however, following a phonebooth war with compatriot Cecilia Sofia Mena, who was stopped in the sixth round on cuts.
Her first defence will come against the 6-0 (4 knockouts) hazel Keenan in what will be the Irishwoman’s first attempt at world glory in the paid ranks.
Sanchez is a former super-featherweight world champion, beating Greece’s then-undefeated Areti Mastrodouka to take the IBF crown last March. She defended that title once, versus an unheralded fellow Argentine, before abdicating and losing out to Finland’s Eva Wahlstrom on points in Helsinki for its WBC equivalent.
