President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, in response to mass rallies in Cairo and Alexandria, has officially given in to the unrest. Supporters of the advocacy group "Return to the Homeland", who began mass rallies in Alexandria, a city with a dense population of Greek diasporia, celebrated the victory vigorously. The leader of the advocacy group, Dimitris Koutsompous, credited the victory to a strong showing by the Greek -Egyptian population. Negotiations for the annexation will begin on December 22nd, followed by the issuance of Greek passports to all Egyptian citizens. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who is in Cairo for negotiations, hails the annexation as a stepping stone for the future of the so- called "Megali Idea" or Big Idea, a phrase that was coined by the late Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos.
