Early today, Longmeadow residents Alvin and Marci Goldberg were taking their morning walk through town and reported a nine foot long boa constrictor near the site of the new CVS at the Longmeadow Shoppes.
"At first I thought it was a crumpled up trash bag or some construction debris," Mr. Goldberg said. "When I got closer, it was obvious this was a huge snake." He added that he was sure it was a boa constrictor.
The giant snake was on the grass between CVS and the First Church of Christ, Scientist on Bliss Road, near the intersection of Frank Smith Road, Goldberg said.
The Goldbergs phoned Longmeadow Police about the rogue reptile and waited for first responders -- from a safe distance.
Officers arrived less than ten minutes later, but the snake had slithered into the bushes and out of sight before they got there.
"There was no way I was following it," Mrs. Goldberg said. "It was gigantic."
Boa constrictors are native to tropical regions, but are sometimes kept as pets. There have been no further sightings of the snake since Monday morning.
