According to the city's newest business analyst, a decision has been reached on the renaming of the historic Brady District. The Brady Arts District’s name came under intense scrutiny four years ago after revelations that its namesake, early Tulsa businessman Wyatt Tate Brady, was a member of the Ku Klux Klan.
The Tulsa City Council, which has jurisdiction over the street name but not the business district, eventually renamed the street M.B. Brady Street, after Civil War photographer Mathew Brady.
The business association voted last month to rebrand the district following months of consideration and more recent racially charged events in Charlottesville, Virginia, which left one counter-protester dead. The occurrences in Charlottesville ignited renewed protests against racism across the nation and locally.
The official name for the district will be called "Jenks District", according to officials this name will attract the semi-middle class who can survive on their credit cards, and can't afford to eat out at its local restaurants and still live beyond their means in order to keep up appearances with the local soccer moms. The district will also widen its parking spaces to accommodate the SUV's and other leased luxury SUV's they expect to take up the area in the near future.
