Just after the first week in the NFL, one of the biggest trades of the year has happened, and to one of its high profile players. The Carolina Panthers announced today that they have traded quarterback Cam Newton to the New York Jets for the Jets 1st round draft pick and 2nd round draft pick in the 2018 NFL draft. Panthers interim general manager, Marty Hurney announced today to a stunned Charlotte press core at Bank of America Stadium. "The Panthers wish the best for Cam, and look forward to build for the future in Carolina", Hurney said in his press conference this morning.
Cam Newton is coming off one of his worst years statistically as the Panthers starting quarterback. Amassing only 6 wins, with a career low 75.8 passer rating and only 19 touchdowns. The Panther's general manager stated that, "we decided after the 49ers game last wekeend that it was time to pull the trigger", Hurney said of Newton's low passer rating of only 87.3 for the game, with 1 interception.
As for the New York Jets, Todd Bowles, head coach, couldn't be happier. "We've had difficulty with the quarterback position over the years", Bowles said. "In bringing in Cam we can get back to the business of winning football games for New York", exclaimed Bowles.
Cam Newton couldn't be reached for comment as he was travelling to New York by plane to Met Life Stadium. Newton is expected to be suited up this weekend for the Jets' home game against rival the Miami Dolphins. Although it isn't clear at this point whether Newton will see any playing time due to the shortness of the week and preparation.
Panther fans from across the Charlotte region are stunned by the news of Newton's trade to the Jets. 610 am The Fan, Charlotte sports talk radio has been jammed all morning with calls of frustration, complaints about Hurney and even some seeing this trade as a good thing for the Panthers.
The NFL couldn't be reached for comment, but the official trade is listed on the NFL website as approved.
