WASHINGTON D.C. - In a move that has analysts scratching their heads, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) introduced co-authored H.R. 592, limiting congressional term limits to 3 terms, or 6 years.
The bill also limits or eliminates completely many of the lifetime perks congress has historically enjoyed, such as health care coverage and a pension.
"In the past, election meant we would be rich and cared for for life. How can we understand the struggles of Americans when we know we'll never experience them?" Paul Ryan said in a joint press conference as Nancy Pelosi nodded agreement. "Hopefully, with these changes, congress can be more in touch with the realities of the majority of Americans."
"It's time congress stop looking down our noses at the American public, and join them," Pelosi said in a later interview.
Already other representatives are crying foul, with Maxine Waters (D-CA) leading the charge.
"This is just institutionalized racism trying to take my power!" Waters cried at a No Term Limits rally she organized.
Next up, the bill will go before the full house for a vote, then, if that passes, it will proceed to the Senate.
