John Nelson, the first mentally disabled servicemen to serve in the United States Army, is recovering at Fort Jackson hospital after accidentally detonating a grenade during basic training. Losing his left leg and severely damaging his right, his first response was simply, "I'm sorry!". Private John Nelson will be medically separated after being released from the hospital.
