On 15 July 2017 a family hiking near Keown Falls on Johns Mountain in Walker County, Georgia sighted what they described as a family of "Bigfoots." Joseph Dreyling of Conyers, Georgia was in the area visiting his sister for a birthday party and decided to take his family to the Keown Falls overlook near the small town of Villanow, Georgia. On the way back to their car his son Jimmy saw what looked like a baby gorilla peeking from behind a tree. The small animal disappeared in a growth of ferns before any photos could be taken. Dreyling was able to get a photo of another member of the group hiding among the vegetation nearby.
After returning to his sisters home the family reported the incident to the U.S. Forestry Service office in nearby LaFayette, Georgia. After looking at the photo, Forestry Ranger Gary Morris stated that it could easily be a black bear that is common in the mountains of North Georgia. Mr. Dreyling respectfully disagrees. "We saw at least four in the group. Two were small and hid in the undergrowth before we gould get a good look at them. One of the larger ones vanished with the little ones but one of them stayed between us and the others as if it was guarding them. It was a scary, frighting experiance but my family and I feel that we have witnessed a once in a lifetime thing that not many people get to see."
