Meteorologists have predicted a once in a thousand year snow storm for Lookout, West Virginia. The phenomenon creates a micro climate for a specific circular region up to a 40 mile radius. John Beckwather, Ph.D. A top climate scientist explained the radial storm as a very rare occurrence. He used an example of putting a straw down in a very warm bottle with a piece of ice at the top of the straw. The density of cold air will go to the bottom. Also, the cold dense air will draw the humidity from the hot air to create a major snow storm at the bottom. The radial storm area will be a very low pressure system, surrounded by very high pressure on the outer edge of the storm. Outside the radial storm the temperatures could be 90 degrees with temperatures inside the radial being in the teens. Meteorologists are predicting up to 60 inches of snow within the radial storm area, with no snow outside the radial. The last recorded radial storm was in 1867 in the Sahara Desert, where over 40 camels reportedly perished. Climate Scientists from around the world are coming to West Virginia to monitor the phenomenon.
