Earlier this year numerous complaints were received by Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge managers regarding the impact of commercial fishing and harvesting of sport fish within the park's boundaries. In response to what a spokesperson called; "An overwhelming number of petition signatures from the group Preserve Refuge Wildlife", a small group study was commissioned to examine the most effective way to abate the recent decline in several fish species in Mosquito Lagoon. One of the key findings of the study was the number of fish that could potentially be limited by eliminating the 80 sanctioned vendors who MINWR had previously authorized to offer charters in the waters it manages. Beginning in FY 2018, guide permits will be suspended for 36 months. If surveys of fish stocks reveal that numbers increase noticeably, the suspension may become permanent.
