Officials are saying that a record setting catfish the size of a small whale caused the early morning loss of power to residents around New Johnsonville, TN.

According to TWRA marine biologist Robert Hathcock a catfish swam too close to the water intake of the TVA steam plant and was trapped against the intake causing a drastic reduction of water flow.

"The fish was large enough to completely block the intake to the steam unit here in New Johnsonville. Temporarily shutting off the pumps allowed the fish to get free. " said Mr. Hathcock. "The fish had suffered enough damage it would soon perish. We decided to harvest the fish for humanitarian and scientific reasons. Once we are finished examining the body, we will release it to the Grey Heron."

The Grey Heron, a local restaurant and marina, will host a fish fry of the monster catfish this weekend to raise money for the repairs needed to the intake.

"Even after cutting out the bruised and injured portions of the catfish it was still over 1,200 pounds" said Hathcock.

Catfish will be available this weekend at the marina.
