Ecuador Leaving U.S. Dollar For New National Currency

In a startling change of direction, Ecuador announced that on August 1 this switch will occur. The new money will not be tied to the U.S. dollar. Initial denominations are being developed. Initially, it is projected the new money, dubbed the "Lenin" would have a rate of approximately 37 to 1 U.S. dollar.

President Moreno made the announcement today at a hastily convened press meeting. Opponents criticized the move declaring more national debate should occur. The most controversy seems to have come from the naming of the currency. Factions within Moreno's own party protested that it should have been named the Correa or possibly the Chavez.
