Lamar Odom, a former National Basketball Association all-star, passed away late Tuesday evening from complications of the liver. Having partially recovered from a coma thought to be induced by alleged drug use at the Love Ranch brothel in Nevada in 2015, Odom arrived at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles Tuesday morning after a family member noticed signs of breathing difficulty. The retired basketball player fell into unconsciousness and was pronounced dead at 8:47 PM local time.
Close family members declined to comment. A representative of the family asked the press to respect their wishes for privacy, and thanked Odom's fans for their continual support.
Odom leaves behind a legacy of basketball excellence and exemplary sportsmanship, demonstrated in his career with teams such as the Los Angeles Lakers, the Miami Heat, and the Dallas Mavericks, spanning three decades.
During his youth, Odom was teamed with future NBA players Elton Brand and Ron Artest (later known as Metta World Peace) on the same AAU team, and played with future Lakers teammate Kobe Bryant at Adidas ABCD camps. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team, but twice he violated the league’s drug policy in his four seasons with the Clippers.
Odom has struggled for years with drug addiction. Sources close to Odom told ET online that he wasn’t a bad person, but he struggled with demons. The sources said: “When Lamar is good, he’s good. But when he’s bad, there’s no way of getting any worse (except by dying, but thankfully that hasn't happened yet, and hopefully will not happen before he turns 38 years old).”
At the time of reporting, Odom's former gold-digging whore wife, Khloé Kardashian, could not be reached for comment.
