After a less than stellar outing of Michael Bay's latest offering of giant autonomous robots duking it out from Medieval to modern times in Transformers - The Last Knight, Hasbro has made the decision to partner one last time with Paramount Pictures Studio to recreate every 80's fanboy's favorite cartoon movie. Though the original animated movie wasn't a box office smash in itself, Hasbro finally thought it was time to answer the growing voices of disappointment by adapting the original formula that resulted in a behemoth franchise of best-selling merchandise, including troves of toys, apparel and lunch boxes.
Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner stated, "We hear you! We know you've been asking for it since the latest incarnation of big screen Transformers movies began in 2007, and we're excited to get started on making a virtual scene by scene [redux] version of the Matrix of Leadership being passed on from the venerable Optimus Prime to Hot Rod, all the while fending off Megatron, Galvatron and the planet-eating planet Unicron. There will be very few adjustments made, but one that must be addressed is the timeline. 2005 has long since passed, so we're going to ensure that it remains relevant to today."
It is unclear and improbable whether Michael Bay will head up this monumental task of staying true to the original vision and spirit of the franchise, though it has been confirmed that Peter Cullen and Frank Welker will be extatically lending their voices in this venture as Optimus Prime and Megatron, respectively. It is also unclear who the studios have in mind to replace the irreplaceable Orson Wells (Unicron) and Leonard Nimoy (Galvatron).
Paramount has made it clear that although the green light has been lit for this project, don't expect a release any sooner than 2019. That would be a great way to celebrate the 35th anniversary.
