Taylor Mentz, 21, of Washington, MO placed 49th out of 50 Thursday in the World Classic Shetland Pony Races held in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mentz, a 3rd year competitor, edged out Oklahoma native Hue Janis, 54, for the 49th spot. This year's performance comes as quite a disappointment as Mentz and her pony "Apollo's Chariot" a.k.a. "Pat" were the favorite to win the races.
Mentz remains optimistic and is looking toward 2917. "Shetland racing is an unpredictable sport. The pony's legs are so short and being 5'9", my feet typically drag the ground a bit, so I guess you could call it more of a drag race. Which is tough facing jockeys like Hue who have a leg up on the competition, being a double amputee. But in the end, the only thing we can do is learn from this and focus on next year's races."
