BJJ News has recently interviewed a man who wishes to remain anonymous but claims to have been a blue belt for over 20 years. When asked why he never reached the next belt level (purple belt) he responded with the following.
"People are worried about belts and their colors. Like the founder of our system once said, a belt is a tool to hold your pants up, that's it." "I feel when I am ready for the next rank I will be promoted to the next rank. I believe in the system, I put all my faith in my system and I know that one day I will reach the next level, but only when they think i'm ready."
The practitioner who owns a school in the Mid Michigan area said "Everyone wants to eat the dessert first, while ignoring the vegetables."
But it's those vegetables that give you the foundation in which to grow.
When asked about his instructor he responded with great admiration. "My actual instructors are across the country but I would hitchhike or even walk across the US in a heartbeat for a chance to train with them if they asked me to."
The proud and determined look in his eyes left me believing he was definitely telling the truth. This is a man with conviction, a man with integrity, a man with honor. A man who will one day be known as the oldest living blue belt in the world.
